Fleeting's Forewarning

Life and time are as fragile and rare as your great-grandmother’s fine china and should be handled as delicately. Yet, we all know that is not how we move through our days. Those twenty-four hour periods slip through our hands like those soapy plates being rinsed and put into the drying rack following Thanksgiving dinner.

A poignant story about brevity and the once-in-a-lifetime privilege of raising a child is handled like family heirlooms in the movie, “Goodbye Christopher Robin.” It suggests that children write stories on our hearts so quickly and pen “The End” before we can say “Empty nest!” (We will dive into the backstory of “Winnie The Poo” at a later time.)

Childhood is tied so tightly to Thanksgiving because most of us have discovered that the turkey in the center of the table would be pretty lonely without our children and other family and friends seated around it.

Sure, we can thank God for food. Oh, and yes, money - for poverty serves few well no matter how many folks try to romanticize it. We can be grateful to The Lord for health though our bodies eventually betray us. And the list goes on and on.

But it is the speed with which kids grow up that makes us come to our Thanksgiving senses for we have to slow down just to catch up with them.

It is this rapidity that is a greater assault on our senses than the turkey and all the trimmings.

Author Charles Dickens already had a few kids the Thanksgiving before his release of The Christmas Carol. Perhaps it was when he surveyed his own holiday table that he was inspired to write Tiny Tim’s memorable line, “God bless us, everyone!”

PORTAL TO HEAVEN: If people and things went on forever, we'd be hard-pressed to appreciate them. Their fleeting status makes them valuable. What's before you right now?

Let me know how transient I am…So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom…Remember what my span of life is; For what vanity You have created all the sons of men!… Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him.
