New Life In A 3-Car Garage

(This Week: Rosh Hashanah's New Life.)

"Who would suspect that a desert could grow in a garage…

Reaching into a gray plastic storage container, I pull out a spider, some mice nests and turn my nose from the sight.

Seeing precious photographs, scrapbooks and little dolls from our previous homes reduced to a mouse house actually stung worse than a spider bite. How the mighty have fallen!

Putting things away for a college summer or two is one thing. A decade is precisely twice the “five-year rule.” So, this one’s on me. It should have never gone this far.

Strange things are seen in a desert. I would have rather viewed a mirage. The nauseating storage bin was representative of the length and breadth of a desert. These weren’t simply old pictures and souvenirs. They were embalmed relics in a miniature pyramid swept under from some severe sandstorms. After all, it takes a lot of sand to cover a pyramid.

Unearthing them should have brought some sentimental tears, but the must and odor made me sneeze instead. The only things in my eyes were the sands of time. That’s about right for a desert.

I sorted what could be saved and tossed out the unsalvageable. Tomorrow, I’ll spend some money on postage and put out the sand, I mean trash.

By God’s grace, he assigned mailmen and garbagemen to carry things away that have been parked too long in the garages of life.

PORTAL TO HEAVEN: Deserts may seem to stretch forever, but one simple, courageous step may get us closer to a new day in a new land.

I cared for you in the wilderness, In the land of drought… Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

Deuteronomy 8:2 (NIV), Hosea 13:5 (NASB)
